About us
STAND is an inclusive community group that arose from the basic question, in an environment governed with a seeming intent to do harm, what can we do to help? We came up with three answers:
Support people in our community harmed by unjust policy.
Communicate information to those that need it, and demand truth from those seeking to hide it.
Protest and influence policies that fundamentally undermine people’s worth.
These are our guiding missions: Support, Communicate, and Protest. They work in concert to pull people from the margins, give them the information they need, and help them make meaningful impact on their community.
HOME BASE
STAND began as a working group of individuals who routinely attend North Decatur United Methodist Church, but it is not a religious organization. While NDUMC serves as a home base for STAND, we have grown into a community of neighbors and friends spanning across race, creed, socioeconomic status, sexuality, and gender identity. We are not all united by background, but by common belief: that all life is inherently, unassailably, irrevocably valuable. We confidently proclaim, as does NDUMC, that whether you are black or white, rich or poor, young or old, gay or straight, cis or trans, you are welcome here.
